artist statement:
My paintings come from visions in my head that are inspired by biology, dreams, nature, color mixing, the female form, fashion and historical eras. Ideas for paintings are always popping into my head and at times I have to stop what I’m doing and sketch it out quickly so I don’t forget the image. I work with acrylic paints and a mixed media illustrative style that I have formed which consists of watercolor, ink pen, acrylic and collage on tea-stained paper.
When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of joy. I love the feeling of being able to form an image on canvas or paper that is visible to everyone, yet was once only a figment of my imagination. The creation process can involve a rollercoaster of emotions, but the end result is fulfilling and worth the struggles. I know a piece is done when I feel that it can “speak” on its own. As I’m working on a painting, the female character begins to develop a persona and sometimes I feel that I have to change the hair or eye color in order to match her personality. I enjoy not knowing where the painting is going to take me. The mystery of what the final result will be is the most exciting part of the creation process.
My current body of work focuses on my obsession with how the universe was created as well as the creation of all living things on earth. I incorporate a female subject who represents mother earth, and I often include DNA strands, atoms and cells in my paintings as symbols for the creation of life. I have recently expanded on that idea and am going to explore the idea of multiple dimensions and life on other planets in the multi-verse. The colors in the galaxies are so inspiring and I look forward to seeing where this body of work will take me in the future.
